Press Release

Washington, D.C.  Today, Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) and Congressman Anthony Gonzalez (OH-16) along with a bipartisan group of colleagues released the following statement after introducing H.R. 3497, the JOBS (Jumpstart Our Businesses By Supporting Students) Act:

“The demand for a skilled workforce far exceeds the supply in today’s economy,” said Rep. Richmond. “This bill will help fill that void by expanding Pell Grant eligibility to provide six million more students access to the training and skills they need in my district and nationwide. In an evolving workforce, we must work to meet the needs of middle-skill jobs. The JOBS Act accomplishes that goal and makes a meaningful investment in the development of America’s talent.”

“In Ohio alone, over 152,000 jobs remain available – 80,700 of which are paying over $50,000. With employers clamoring for more qualified employees, these jobs are untapped opportunities for our workers, our students and our children,” said Congressman Gonzalez. “The JOBS Act is critical to providing Northeast Ohioans who don’t want to pursue a traditional degree an opportunity to advance their careers and achieve a better future.”

“As workforce professionals, we work every day to develop programs with our industry partners so we can create and implement training opportunities for our citizens. To do this better, we need more workforce funding tools to better serve our industry partners and our citizens. This is why we are advocating for the workforce funding tool of having Pell Grants to cover the training costs for high-quality, industry-based certification/credential training that is less than 600 clock hours.” - Girard Melancon, Vice Chancellor for Workforce Solutions at Baton Rouge Community College
