Rep. Richmond Expresses Concerns on the Financial Burdens of Airline Passengers
Washington, DC – Earlier this week, Rep. Richmond (LA-02) expressed his concerns on the financial burdens of airline passengers in a letter sent to Nicholas Calio, President and CEO of Airlines for America. In addition to pointing out that fares have remained stagnant despite significant declines in fuel costs, the Congressman also requested an explanation on the lawsuit recently filed to prevent travel websites from helping consumers save money by purchasing “hidden city” plane tickets.
“Oil prices have plummeted in recent months as a result of the ongoing American oil and gas boom and consumers are reaping the benefits at gas pumps nationwide,” said Rep. Richmond. “With the cost of fuel dropping rapidly, it only seems fair that some of those savings would be passed on to consumers.”
“Given the high cost of air travel in these still difficult economic times, it makes sense that travelers would seek out alternative measures to save money on travel. While it is important to ensure American companies are able to compete globally on an even playing field, we must also take great care to protect the interests of American consumers.”
