Press Release

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02), released the following statement after receiving the 2016 Innocence Network Champion of Justice award:

“Reforming the criminal justice system has been a priority throughout my career in public service,” said Rep. Richmond. “I have seen first-hand how wrongful convictions demoralize individuals, distress families, and devastate entire communities.

“The work of the Innocence Network has been tremendous. True progress has been made, however, there is so much more left to do to ensure fair and just outcomes for each individual accused of a crime. I will continue to be a strong partner with the Innocence Network in this effort. The work is too important and the consequences too grave.”

The Innocence Network Champion of Justice Award was created to honor public servants who go above and beyond in supporting and championing efforts that free the wrongfully convicted, and/or reform the criminal justice system to prevent wrongful convictions. Their work strengthens the integrity of the justice system, is imbued by their sense of fairness and professionalism, and demonstrates a lasting dedication to the fair execution of the law.
