Rep. Richmond Responds to the State of the Union Address
Washington, DC – Rep. Richmond (LA-02) released the following statement in response to President Obama’s State of the Union Address.
“Tonight, the President laid out his legislative priorities and his vision for the nation,” said Rep. Richmond. “While the economy has grown and jobs have been created at a record pace, far too many Americans have yet to reap the benefits. I share the President’s determination to build an economic agenda that helps working families as oppose to our current system that has left them on their own.”
“Pursuing innovative policies like creating a community college system that is free for anyone willing to put in the hard work allows more students to access the middle class and grows the economy. Taking steps to make mortgages more affordable provides protection for the individual rather than the mortgage companies. Defending our nation’s infrastructure from cyber threats makes the country safer and more secure. Making the tax code fairer helps working families as they continue to struggle with cost of childcare, college, and secure retirement. Preventing parents from having to put their sick children on the school bus because they don't have leave to take care of them at home strengthens families. Although, we have an obligation to invest responsibly we cannot be afraid to lead in these areas.”
“The investor class has done well in this economic climate but the average working family has been left behind. Adopting many of the policies the President laid out tonight will allow them to share in the economic gains. I will stand with the President to allow every American who works hard and plays by the rules to succeed. ”
