Rep. Richmond Statement on Republican Homeland Security Funding Bill
Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Richmond (LA-02) released the following statement on the House Republicans’ Homeland Security funding bill for FY 2015.
“The Homeland Security spending bill put forth by House Republicans last Friday fails to provide the necessary resources to adequately secure our nation and is outright reckless,” said Rep. Richmond. “Instead of presenting a bill that sufficiently addresses our national security, they have elected to jeopardize the safety of our nation for the sake of party politics. “
“These efforts to undermine immigration reform by delaying funding are jeopardizing the operation of DHS at a time when we must be fully equipped against acts of terrorism. Recent events have shown that the threat of terrorism is still very real whether it is through cyber-attacks, as we experienced with the breach of Sony, or acts of barbarism as we have witnessed in Paris during the shooting tragedy at Charlie Hedbo. It is imperative that we ensure DHS is well prepared to identify such acts so that they can be in the best possible position to prevent them. This Republican proposal would leave us vulnerable to these types of dangers, merely to undercut the President.”
“I urge my Republican colleagues to stop pandering to the extremist wing of their party and put these political games aside. We must present a clean funding bill that will avoid a partial government shutdown and allow DHS to fulfill its mission of protecting our homeland.”
