Press Release

Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Richmond (LA-02) issued the following statement regarding the twelfth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina making landfall in Louisiana.

“Twelve years ago today, the Gulf Coast region experienced an unprecedented tragedy,” said Rep. Richmond (LA-02). “Hurricane Katrina ravaged numerous Gulf Coast communities and attempted to break the spirits of many. In spite of Katrina’s efforts, we proved to be resilient. People came together to rebuild homes and communities.  While we celebrate the recovery that has happened, we also remember that not all of us made it and some things will never be the same.  On this day, we honor the countless lives we lost, the countless families who were displaced, and the countless men and women who worked to save lives.”

“Unfortunately, on this anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Harvey is causing devastation at a level that we hoped to never see again. Today, as we reflect on how far we’ve come, we must continue to pray for the safety of everyone affected by Harvey. The people of Houston and Texans across the state were there for us twelve years ago, and we will be there for them now. I will commit all my energies in Congress to ensure that the people of Texas and Louisiana affected by this storm have all they need from the federal government for a full recovery.”
